Flexible Pond Liner FAQs

What Thickness Pond Liner do I need?

The quality and thickness of a liner will reflect in its durability and life expectancy.
When considering pond liner thickness, consider the possibility of root damage or unwanted traffic from pets or wildlife entering the pond. If likely, we recommend our best pond liner, 1mm Firestone Rubber Pond Liner, installed with underlay protection.
If building a pond in a formal design, you may want any folds to be less intrusive. Using a thinner, highly flexible 0.75mm rubber liner such as EcoSeal or Butyl will achieve a neater finish. For a perfect finish, it is possible to have a pond liner box welded to eliminate the need for any folds. Contact us for more information.

TIP: Intricate pond designs are time-consuming to build, especially when liners are built into walls, waterfalls, etc. Using a cheaper, thinner liner can be a false economy as any replacement would involve a near-complete pond rebuild.
Note: Pond liner warranties only cover manufacturer failure and do NOT cover any damage caused by external factors or poor installation. Check individual manufactures installation guides and check out our pond liner installation guide before you start.

What should I put under my pond liner?

Pond liners are great at containing water. However, once filled, a pond is heavy, making the liner vulnerable to jagged edges or sharp stones in the substrate below. The liner also needs protection from any aggressive roots.
Do I need to use a pond underlay? Yes,
we recommend a Geotextile Pond Underlay, a high quality, non-woven, mechanically bonded, needle-punched, polypropylene geotextiles. Geotextile underlay offers exceptionally high performance and provides a highly effective protective barrier between substrate and pond liner. Using underlay helps protect the pond liner from sharp stones, roots, etc and reduces excessive localised stretching of the liner when ground settlement occurs over time.
Can I use sand under my pond liner? Sand can be a helpful substrate for levelling off and shaping your pond, but it will offer little or NO protection from roots, and sharp stones that could work there way through the sand over time.
Can I use carpet under my pond liner? We regularly get asked if an old carpet is a suitable alternative to a Pond Liner Underlay. A man-made carpet may offer limited protection, but it will depend on its construction and weave to its ability to stop sharp objects and lifespan before it breaks down.
Can I use newspaper under my pond liner? No, we would not recommend newspapers as liner protection. They will quickly become wet and rot, while any root would work there way through.

Pond Underlay Tips?

TIP: A Geotextile Pond Underlay system is an inexpensive component in any garden pond scheme offering peace of mind protection. It is light and easy to handle and won't break down over time. We would always recommend this over a used carpet.
